Fandom is really all about the sharing and the enjoying, in the end, reallyThey just want to write a story and share it, they don't really care if you thought something was worded badly or if you didn't like the ending. They wrote it because it was fun and they wanted to share it with people who might also enjoy it.
I think you have to be very careful with criticism. Some people absolutely love it and want it; other people really don't. Once again, it gets back to what a person is doing in fandom and what a person is doing writing fanfiction. For some it's really just participating in the dialogue, not trying to be the best writer ever.
While I understand your frustration, I think we have to be careful not to mistake our own purposes for other people's. We also need to stop privileging the "real writers" who want line by line concrit and looking down on those who are just having fun with it. There's nothing wrong with having fun with it, right?
I don't think accessibility gives everyone the right to do what they want with something, though
But at the bottom of the premise here is the assumption that people post things in order to get your help in getting better, and that's not always the point. But I respect the fact that some people just don't really care to "get better". They just want to write and share and have fun. It took me a while to understand, watching someone write 40 odd chapters of a fic that was so awful even a summary of the plot made me retch. Why is she doing this? Why is she writing this awful, awful fic? Well, because she enjoys it, that's why. And who am I to tell her to fix it? It's the way she likes it. Different strokes and all that.
I do think it's legitimate feedback; it's feedback from someone who read the story, enjoyed it, and wanted to say so, but doesn't really want to turn it into an intellectual pursuit. I think that's okay. Writing concrit is work, and none of us get paid to do this fanfiction thing. I personally don't expect anyone to do extra work when they read something I wrote, unless it's person who has agreed to be a beta reader for me. Everyone else gets to take what they want from it and do as they will. That includes critiquing, flaming, con crit, or squeeing.
